That fangirling over Led Zeppelin in my previous post reminded me to post a meta-y thing that's been on my mind for a bit:

Do you think television shows (or any entertainment media, really) influence your music tastes? I definitely do. (I'll be using Supernatural as my main example, since that's the first TV show I've watched where I totally freaked over the soundtrack.)

When the spoilers for Crossroad Blues came around, I was interested. I'd never actually heard the legend of Robert Johnson – shocking, I know – and later, when I was listening to my dad's iPod, I found an Eric Clapton album entitled Me and Mr. Johnson. Intrigued, I listened, and fell completely in love.

My dad has been trying for years to get me to listen to the blues. After that episode, I uploaded Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, etc. to my computer. I listen to "Texas Flood" probably every day. If it wasn't for that episode of SPN, I probably would have just said, "Yeah, uh-huh," when my dad tried to point me towards a new blues album.

Plus, does a TV show increase in your personal ranking due to its music? While Prison Break has made weird song choices (rap music = impending race war, using the House theme song in a peculiar "here's what the convicts are going to do when they're free" montage), the usage of "Orange Sky" by Alexi Murdoch in 1.05 made that episde so much more emotional. I cried (stfu) and became far more attached to Michael because of the last scene.

In the pilot episode of Supernatural, I cheered when AC/DC's "Back in Black" started playing. From that moment, I thought this show is going to be fucking excellent. I'm pretty sure one of the reasons my dad stopped making fun of Supernatural is that Spinal Tap is on the soundtrack. (In fact, a few hours after he watched that scene with me, he went out and bought some special edition of Spinal Tap.)

So. Music in television – does it affect your own music tastes?

I don't really know what the general fandom consensus is about lurkers. I've read a few posts, but my memory is wiped clean after about, oh, three to five minutes. My guess is that the feeling towards lurkers is mild annoyance - you know, "Why don't they crawl out of their holes?" type thoughts.

But I'm an occasional lurker. Here's why. )

So...no real conclusion here. Just my brain spitting out phrases that have been spinning around for a few days. But I do read every single post that any of you make. Cross my heart and swear to die.

What are your opinions on lurkers?

1. A few brief thoughts on the PB 206 promo pictures:
Wow. Why have we not seen C-Note's arms?

I love to see T-Bag invade Michael's personal space. I missed it dearly.

Michael has an oral fixation and T-Bag is sketchy. Not like that, unfortunately.
WARNING: Spoilers in comments.

2. I watched Walking Tall yesterday, just because The Rock and Johnny Knoxville were in it. Great fight scenes, but other than that, it pretty much sucked. But hey. The Rock is damn hot.

3. I've been thinking about fandom and RL recently. I don't flaunt my fandom identity in RL – to me, fandom is a place where I can lose myself completely among the ambiguous homoerotic subtext, the thorough discussions, the pretty people, and the fantastic writing. I like to keep them separate, because fandom is something of my own. I can look to fandom when I've had a shitty day, because there's nothing like T-Bag being sketchy or House being snarky to make me grin; I can look to fandom for great conversations, for wonderful pieces of art and writing, for people that make me laugh.

It's not that I'm afraid of people finding out. I don't think my friends would give a shit, and my parents would just double the amount of gay subtext jokes when we watch TV. It's just that fandom is so damn special to me – I'm too selfish to share the experience with someone else, I think.

4. Rec: Walking a Line by [info]swear_jar. Supernatural/Boondock Saints, Dean's POV, Connor/Murphy, R. Sam’s dead. Dean falls.

Fantastic. The writing is superb (there were a few run-on sentences, but I learned to ignore them), and you just feel Dean's loneliness – this deep ache – and there are all these little hints of what he feels when he looks at Connor and Murphy, and just – wow. I loved it. The story is told exceptionally well.

Why are there so few SPN/BDS crossovers? We all say that we love them, but there's only two (including this one) that I know of. Write, you damn authors.

5. Abruzzi Ficfest post coming up in 10 minutes or so. /procastination

I'm so fucking glad for the screens on my window right now. There's this huge bug – I have no idea what the fuck it is, I think it's a bee or a flying beetle or maybe it's an alien – that keeps flying up to my screen and making buzzing sounds. I flicked it away a few times, but it kept coming back, so I've resorted to hitting my screen with a rolled up magazine. I thought I had killed it, because the second time, it was all wobbly and couldn't really clutch onto my screen, and I whacked the screen really hard. But it keeps coming back, and it's joined by aproximently. 283,395 moths.

I hate bugs.

My Sunday was relaxing – I did nothing but sit and read fic: slash, het, gen, old fandoms, current ones, new ones, pieces I've never read, and pieces I often re-read whenever I get the chance. Unfortunately, I found myself clicking the back button more than I wanted to. I'm not sure if it was because my room was stuffy and I was in a bad mood, or because I've suddenly gained a super low tolerance for things that tick me off in writing (not limited to fanfiction). With the exception of classic annoyances – improper grammar and spelling, outrageous plots that don't make sense, OOCness, Mary Sues (aka, everything you see at [info]fanficrants and more) – there are certain things that just make me irritated.

So, I've decided to share with you my Top Tens Threes: What I Love and What I Don't. )

Please, share your opinion. :)

(I still hate that fucking bug. It's going to keep my up all night. ARGH.)
