That fangirling over Led Zeppelin in my previous post reminded me to post a meta-y thing that's been on my mind for a bit:
Do you think television shows (or any entertainment media, really) influence your music tastes? I definitely do. (I'll be using Supernatural as my main example, since that's the first TV show I've watched where I totally freaked over the soundtrack.)
When the spoilers for Crossroad Blues came around, I was interested. I'd never actually heard the legend of Robert Johnson – shocking, I know – and later, when I was listening to my dad's iPod, I found an Eric Clapton album entitled Me and Mr. Johnson. Intrigued, I listened, and fell completely in love.
My dad has been trying for years to get me to listen to the blues. After that episode, I uploaded Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, etc. to my computer. I listen to "Texas Flood" probably every day. If it wasn't for that episode of SPN, I probably would have just said, "Yeah, uh-huh," when my dad tried to point me towards a new blues album.
Plus, does a TV show increase in your personal ranking due to its music? While Prison Break has made weird song choices (rap music = impending race war, using the House theme song in a peculiar "here's what the convicts are going to do when they're free" montage), the usage of "Orange Sky" by Alexi Murdoch in 1.05 made that episde so much more emotional. I cried (stfu) and became far more attached to Michael because of the last scene.
In the pilot episode of Supernatural, I cheered when AC/DC's "Back in Black" started playing. From that moment, I thought this show is going to be fucking excellent. I'm pretty sure one of the reasons my dad stopped making fun of Supernatural is that Spinal Tap is on the soundtrack. (In fact, a few hours after he watched that scene with me, he went out and bought some special edition of Spinal Tap.)
So. Music in television – does it affect your own music tastes?
